Isopsephia Calculator
Greek Gematria Verification Tool
Every letter in the Greek alphabet has a numeric value. Isopsephia is the ancient practice of summing those values to find the number of a word or name.
How Isopsephia Works
The Greek alphabet is alphanumeric
The 24 letters of the Greek alphabet each represent both a sound and a number. They are arranged in three groups of eight: units (1-9), tens (10-90), and hundreds (100-900). Three archaic letters (Stigma, Qoppa, Sampi) fill the gaps at 6, 90, and 900.
This system was invented almost a thousand years before the birth of Jesus. Every literate Greek person knew it. It meant that every word, name, and phrase in the Greek language had a calculable numeric value.
Isopsephia in the ancient world
Isopsephia (from iso “equal” + psephos “pebble”) is the practice of adding the letter values of a word to produce a single number. This was widespread in the Greco-Roman world.
A famous example: the Christian Sibylline Oracle (c. 150 AD) describes the son of God as having “four vowels, twofold consonants” and a name totaling “eight monads, eight decads, and eight hundreds” (8 + 80 + 800 = 888). Only the Greek name ΙΗΣΟΥΣ (Jesus) fits all constraints.
Gematria: isopsephia meets geometry
Gematria (from Greek geometria) goes beyond isopsephia by mapping numeric values onto geometric objects. A word’s value becomes the circumference of a circle, the side of a square, or the length of a line.
The name “Jesus” (888), when “raised” by a factor of 10 to 8880, becomes the circumference of the master circle on which all gospel diagrams are constructed.
About this tool
This calculator uses the standard 27-character Greek alphanumeric system. It handles Unicode Greek text (including polytonic/accented characters), archaic numerals, and Latin transliteration. All values can be independently verified using any Greek alphabet reference.
The database contains values documented in the research of Daniel Gleason at jesus8880.com.
